  • i am i am i am superman

so we were waiting for our flight to pittsburgh when i told bwack our drummer, after he had showed me his playlist that he said he would post later, and after he told me he was very tempted to cheat but that his list turned out ok and that he was then glad that it turned out ok so he wouldn’t have to cheat, i told him, i said, “i’m going to video mine. i’ll get on the plane, sit down, open my laptop up and see what happens. of course i can video multiple attempts and just post the best one, but they won’t know that, they’ll think they’re seeing it happen right in front of their eyes, sort of magic like.” but i knew i wouldn’t really, cheat that is. unless the bee gees popped up. then i would. but i sat down on the plane and i opened my laptop up. and this is what happened exactly the first time. this is who i am. i guess. sort of. at least tonight, on my way to pittsburgh.

in case there were visual difficulties, here it is in alternate form:

    1. broken chords can sing a little – a silver mt. zion
    2. chief – patty griffin
    3. mrs. robinson – the lemonheads
    4. reservations – wilco
    5. love can damage your health – telepopmusik
    6. super-charger heaven – white zombie
    7. diamondback – mekka
    8. goodbye – patty griffin
    9. blue turning gray – clap your hands say yeah
    10. bubble toes – jack johnson

bonus: (this game is too difficult to discontinue once started!)
    11. joyful noise 4 – crowder cover (a live recording from a board mix, background vocals only, of a group from atlanta ga covering one of our songs that has a lot of words, many of which they had not yet learned. awesome.)
    12. all good naysayers, speak up! or forever hold your peace! – sufjan stevens
    13. nlg 1.0 (this would be the first mix of ‘never let go’. our labeling system is now no longer a secret. now if you only knew where to look on www next time around.)
    14. hanging around – cardigans
    15. it’s good to be king – tom petty

i might comment later regarding your playlists and reveal who i’d like to hang out with and such. actually, i doubt i’ll say who i’d hang out with based on a shuffled playlist as that would be ridiculous. but, i’ve read them all, the playlists, and, in summary, wow. on the surface it would appear that many of them are incongruous (ian fleming likes this word a lot so i thought i’d try it here) with others. i’m going to have to think about what significance this might hold, i think. also, out of all of your playlists, there was only one britney spears song. that too seems significant. britney spears is an anagram for presbyterians.

  • I’ve only been listening to Remedy for the past two weeks, so I suppose just those ten songs belong in my list (In any random order).

  • crazy Crowder. you’re going to start a trend with your video-recording your iTunes playlist. it may just be the “new” music video :P

i don’t have a music player other than my cd player, and in it is your Remedy cd. i like waking up to “can you feel it”

Your iTunes was being very nice to you my friend….

Had you not been playing the game and allowed yourself to listen to the full length of each tune you would have had quite the enjoyable flight….

  • I became elated when I saw all the Patty Griffin. And I reposted your entire blog from yesterday on my blog links and all, simply because I too wanted to get the lurkers to come out and because your post was too dang funny not to.

  • do you fly first class or are you packed in the back like sardines with the reset of us?

    3. Audience of One – Sanctus Real
    4. Song 2 – Jambi

    13. Wonder of it All – Monday Morning (AMAZING song)
    14. You Consume Me – DC Talk
    15. After Today – Sanctus Real

Dang… from that playlist you’d pretty much think the only 2 bands I listen to are Sanctus Real and Tree63. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great, but there’s a lot of other good music on my player. Oh well. This was fun, and yes addictive… I did this for Phil’s blog like a week ago or something… that was fun!

  • ….”And I can do anything!!!”

My friend once played that song in conjunction with another song, which said “I’m no Superman.” Like he can’t decide whether he’s Super or not.

Anyhow, the only song I’ve heard of on your list is the one by Sufjan Stevens. And that nlg 1.0 song, except I own the REAL version (I suppose you do too… lol)

I was relatively happy with my playlist, except that it picked a bunch of radio hits that I usually don’t listen to. (kinda like turning on KLTY and just listening to all the older songs–therefore gooder–from there) “Drago or the Dragons” by Falling Up is one of the most recently played, and I was happy with that song on there.

I’m so tempted to fix that “gooder” up there…

I’ve had a good time reading your posts. They make me laugh.

  • Word to Sufjan. Hey, you, he, and Anothollo should tour and so all kinds of amazing things! Like… Coming to Chicago and staying in my dorm. All of you. At once.

And then we could record an awesome live, improve album spur of the moment. It would go quadruple platinum, for sure.

  • And, also, by so, I mean do.

  • i like patty griffin.

have you been reading james bond novels?!

    AND hanging out at passionanagrams.com??

    really, david. :)

  • Ok, the anagram thing is really funny. If you came up with that you have way too much time on your hands, but at least the result was amusing. For the record, I am Presbyterian and Britney is not on my playlist. She is on my list of crazy people to avoid, but not my playlist. Ok, fine, in a sadistic moment of weakness I did watch her VMA performance on YouTube, but that is neither here nor there.

  • 1.  Building Steam With a Grain of Salt – DJ Shadow

    2.  If Things Were Perfect – Moby3.  Come Around – Paul Wright4.  Hang On to You – Delirious5.  Southside (featuring Gwen Stefani) – Moby  [what the heck is up with all the Moby all of a sudden?]6.  In a Little While – U27.  Losing a Whole Year – Third Eye Blind8.  Jungle Gym Featuring G. Love – Jack Johnson9.  Is This Love – Cake10.  Like a Star – Corinne Bailey Rae

  • dag, methinks the lady doth protest

  • i think it’s funny that you mentioned something to the effect that the playlists would reveal who you would hang out with.. lol It’s funny because I looked through other people’s lists and found myself saying, “I’d hang out with them” or “I bet they’d be fun to hang out with” lol I’m glad I wasn’t the only one.. it’s funny how music bring people together :)

  • I don’t have iTunes.  My friend tells me this makes me un-American.

Also, I was far too happy to find a new anagram.  Not really find, since you revealed it, but whatever.  I’m a nerd.

It’s funny that on this list I got 3 Phil songs, but on Phil’s blog I didn’t get any.

  • I enjoyed seeing the other artists on your iTunes under what was randomedly chosen. I noticed under telepopmusik that you have ONLY one song by the Christian music hit machine known as Third Day. On top of all that, it’s a song that’s playability happens best during one month out of the year.

One question: is this how you treat the band who so graciously accepted and enjoyed your opening musical prescence for a season on the road a couple years back? By only having one song of theirs on your iTunes.

Whatever your musical tastes, I appreciate and applaud them for I am hopeful they inspire and encourage you to make beautiful and original music yourself.

  • Forgive the lack of relevancy of part of this comment to your post but if you were up to answering such a question, I wanted to ask

In your opinion, what is your favorite music store/music center/ musical instrument retailer in or near Waco?

[I'm a Baylor student and I just miss having a good old Guitar Center or suitable equivalent
around here and it would be nice to hear of any such place
that you would suggest going to.]

There relevant part is your playlist is cool. I’d say it seems nonconforming if that can be applied to a playlist. Dude, I’d like to hang out with you. I’m just kidding – hanging out would be a cool but unlikely prospect, but it’s cool man. GB

  • *The relevant

Also, I only cheated a couple times, and that’s because I also somehow have some disney music… Weird… I’d also like to go on record and say that, apart from the Supertones, who will forever live supreme in my heart, David Crowder Band is without question my favorite band ever…

  • round numero dos:

    1. Frail-Jars of Clay

    2. You Never Know-Dave Matthews Band

    3. Everybody Hurts-R.E.M.

    6. Somebody Told Me-The Killers

    7. Omaha-Counting Crows

    8. So Says I-The Shins

    9. What Would You Say-Dave Matthews Band

    10. I Survived You-Clay Aiken

assumption and inferences on the second round:

i am predisposed to songs of a reflective, unsettled nature that comment on the fragility of the human condition (this is true–one can only live existentially)

i don’t speak icelandic and I can’t decide whether or not I would want to (there is something so beautiful about ambient unintellegibility)

that monty python and broadway make a happy marriage (and the offspring the grandest of spectacles[insert large terry gilliam spectacle squashing this text here)

that the killers and references to androgynous significant others makes for symphonic bliss (i actually heard the 80′s in it’s original context and they remind of what once was)

that august and everything after was the soundtrack of the actualized dawson’s creek (i witnessed every lyric on that album in four short years of high school)

that the shins are a secret password of musical taste (if someone shows distaste for them, you must ask them what britney spears is an anagram for and leave them to their head-scratching)

that dave matthews band is faithful to the spirit of music and unprecocious band-naming (because “sonic delight” would have been cliche–though accurate)

that clay aiken can really, really sing (it’s hard to put words to it really–at the risk of derision, I can’t quit listening)

maybe this should be a weekly thing…

  • i’m inclined to agree – did you mean that the playlists are incongruous with one another, or that the songs within each respective playlist are incongruous?  either way, i found the exercise interesting as i caught myself saying, “oooh, i like that song, too!”, or “who’s that?” as i read others’ lists.  thanx for that xangampetus (xanga + impetus?), it’s always a neat way to play around with itunes, though it may not fully represent my musical palate.

  • many a time i have cheated on this game and i have also avoided it many times.  alas now i cannot!!!

    1.  whole lotta love — led zeppelin

    15.  uncle jonny — the killers

all in all, i’m pretty pleased with it!!

  • I just wrote a post about Britney Spears! … and, I don’t know any of the songs on your playlist, pretty much. I guess we can’t be friends :(

  • So now the world is waiting…Is the person who has Britney on their playlist ACTUALLY a Presbyterian or not?!? I shall not rest until I know.

P.S.  Do you like me??? (based on my playlist)  This, too, is a very important question but pales in comparison to my previous question.

  • I saw you last night in Pittsburgh, awesome job!  The Guitar Hero Guitar was AMAZING!

  • well, it seems, i didn’t follow directions – but not intentionally. i pulled my 10 songs from an established playlist and not from the main area where my total music sits in itunes. if i had then perhaps the “scorpions” and “billy squier” would have showed up. that’s not so bad. but a potentially embarrasing “air supply” song might have appeared. perhaps it’s best i didn’t do it right. now i’m safe and you’ll never know there’s an “air supply” song in my itunes.

  • 1) wide open road – the triifids

  • By not allowing free movement of chords for the church to use
you are hurting the movement of Christ across the world.  You are
hurting the movement of Christ.  Do you get that?  I am a business
student so I know all about business but this is some bull shit,
turning the church into a den of thieves because you all don’t make
enough money off CDs and concerts.  You all need to examine your
lives.  If a church is large enough it will just have some guitarist
figure the chords out and write the lyrics down for free.  If a church
is small and has to pay for your useless sheet music just because it
doesn’t have the resources to figure out the music is RIDICULOUS. It is
absurd to make a small church have to pay to play music.

  • In response to the comment by Boyie: Ignoring all of the other ranting that seems to be the result of an unfounded sense of entitlement, I’d have to say that it’s pretty lofty praise that someone thinks you’re powerful enough to interfere with the will of God. I like that the word ridiculous is capitalized. It implies that they know what it means, but fail to recognize it’s presence within their own statements. The idea that anyone could hinder the will of our all-powerful God is what is, in fact, ridiculous.

In my experience, it is a fact of life that no one will ever be universally popular so, while it is important to do as little harm to others as possible, it is pointless to worry about whether or not everyone likes you and agrees with the things you do. However, it is also my experience that, when confronted with criticism, it’s always comforting to have someone offer you some positive and encouraging words. So, for what it’s worth, I think that you guys and your music do amazing things in facilitating worship through song and helping people to recognize that God is present in all places and mediums, not just those that are generally considered “holy.” Thank you for sharing your thoughts and talents with us. Keep up the great work and God bless!

  • Awesome…you have so many artists on the list that I haven’t really listened to or I haven’t heard of…which makes us the perfect candidates for hanging out with each other!

    Umm..yeah….

You’ve got to read and assess my playlists (I did 2! because I wasn’t sure of which method to use! I like exclamation marks! Or is it exclamation points?!)

But yeah…you’ve got to do it because….umm….I stayed up all night a few times and left cool messages for the band on that Xanga TV widget up there a while back. Messages that you guys would see in the morning because no one posts at like 3:48 AM…but I did!

  • So I know I’m late. I had been temporarily without my
macbook but have it now, so thought I would still post. Please note: while this list is suppose to be shuffled, I do not find it
completely shuffled. You will notice three artists appear more than once on this
list. Also, two of the artists I never listen to. There is actually one song I have
never even heard despite the fact it is in my i-tunes. I say all this to
say, while your friend has an interesting proposition, I do not think this is
    an accurate portrayal of me.

you owe me an apology. you come on my site and start ranting about something you know nothing about? we as a band have posted our chords and lyrics, along with tabs and mp3s of individual guitar parts on our site for free going back to our first national release. it is wrong for you to make assumptions about things you are ignorant of. it makes you appear foolish. i understand you are angry but your venom is injurious and misdirected.

    also, i forgive you.
    grace and peace david

  • I’m confused. But to attack someone or several someone’s for something that the other someone doesn’t know about is kind of odd, especially when it’s 100% untrue, that is, if i understood all of that ranting correctly. But like david, i forgive you
